Complex plane

Category
STANDARD MATHEMATICS
Definition
A two-dimensional picture of complex numbers with real and imaginary coordinates.
Math Level
GENERAL

The complex plane is a geometric picture of complex numbers. The horizontal coordinate gives the real part and the vertical coordinate gives the imaginary part.

For the zeta function, zeros can be plotted as points in this plane. The critical strip and critical line are regions and lines in this geometry, which makes the Riemann Hypothesis partly a statement about where certain points are allowed to lie.
