A matrix is a rectangular array of numbers or other mathematical objects arranged in rows and columns.
Matrices can encode many pairwise relationships at once. In positive-definiteness problems, evaluating a kernel on a collection of points produces a matrix whose quadratic forms reveal whether the required positivity condition holds.
