A cryptographic signature is data produced with a private signing key that can be checked using the corresponding public key.
A valid signature provides evidence that the holder of that private key signed the exact object being verified. It does not by itself establish mathematical correctness, novelty, authorship of every contribution or the time at which the object was created.
